Dear Sir and Madam:
We are deeply concerned and saddened about a blind Chinese man’s situation. We wish to draw your attention to Chen Guangcheng, topmost human rights campaigner, which China used its full state power to crush on. Chen is China’s Helen Keller but with a Martin Luther King’s soul.
Chen Guangcheng became blind after he got a fever when he was a little child. However, he has incredible will power. Even though he was denied much educational experience due to discrimination against blind people, he persevered and eventually he learned law and got a lawyer’s license. His heart embraces all the suffering people. As soon as he learned about law, he helped other blind people to get access to benefits which were denied to them arbitrarily. Living in poor and remote rural areas, Chen used what he learned to help other fellow villagers. Soon hundreds of thousands of people approached this blind lawyer for help. Among them, the most noticeable case was that, thousands of people came to tell him the horrible abuse many families experienced for one-child policy. Many women who were 8-9 months into pregnancy with a baby were forced to undergo abortion. The women were dragged by dozens of men into hospital. A doctor awaiting injected a poisonous needle into her to kill the baby. In some occasions, the women died along with the baby. Even though millions of families experienced such horrible forced abortion along with astronomical fine, Chen as a blind person, is the most courageous and outspoken person to tell the whole truth. For that, Chen paid a very high price.
The world gave Chen honor for what he did. In Jan, 2005, he was elected to be The Top Ten most influential people by Asia Week. In May, 2006 , he was in Time Magazine's list of "2006's Top 100 People Who Shape Our World" . He, like Helen Keller, won the highest honour for the blind people. In a China when dark tyranny is ruling, his vision is far clearer than many people with full sight. Numerous people consider his name: Guang (light), Cheng (honesty) to be the real hope for China.
Despite the honors, In 2006, Chen was sentenced to four years and three months on a fabricated charge. After serving his full sentence and being released in September 2010, Chen was soon kept in complete isolation after a brief time talking over phone. closely monitored and kept under soft detention and even beaten by local authorities. The local government sent hundreds of people to strictly guard around his house or his village day and night. His cellphone signal was also shielded. After a video of his whole family under intense local authority surveillance was released in February, Chen, his wife, son and even his mother were completely cut off from contact with the outside world. Today, even basic food supply is in danger. Villagers reported seeing blood thrown out everyday.
Hundreds of people from all over China of all walks of life attempted to pay a visit to this brave blind man, but all of them were assaulted and their belongings robbed, some of them had severe injuries. No one saw Chen again since Feb 2011, he is currently unknown to be dead or alive.
As a blind man, Chen deserves special care. But he actually suffers the worst persecution by the government. Therefore we appeal to people in the world: please give a helping hand for Chen, for the protection of freedom and human rights of persons with disabilities. Also, please help spread this information to all the international communities to get more support.
Thank you very much!

Joint open letter to
Members of international courts,
Professors and rectors,
Former Peace Prize laureates, and
Current or Former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee:
Proposal for promoting Mr. Chen Guangcheng as nominee of the next Nobel Peace Prize
Chen Guangcheng, a blind self-taught barefoot lawyer, shines like a jewel in the darkest corner of China. He was persecuted because he dared to speak out against the horrendous abuse of thousands of women and forced abortion of their babies, which affected millions of Chinese families. He is continuously and completely blocked out of any means of communication even after serving four and half years of imprisonment, deprived of food supply. His wife, daughter and mother are locked out as well. Even in such situation, his plight and spirit burn like a torch, lightening up China’s courageous pursuit of freedom -despite of the threat of torture. Continuously, hundreds of people risk their own lives to visit him -for he is the hope, the conscience and indeed the light for China even though he is blind. We, the undersigned, believes that he deserves the honor of Nobel Peace Prize - for he stands for peace, and more importantly for human love in China, a country that is the largest dictatorial state, truly the biggest threat to the world peace, though insidiously. Honoring Chen Guangcheng the Nobel Peace Prize would give honor to a unique blind person with a vision for humanity, would highlight the significance of grassroots civil rights advocates despite of the significant poverty and adversity, would further honor the numerous people who take it to their heart to follow him, and would model his behavior to make China a peaceful and just society.
We are pleased to see that the Nobel Peace Prize blossomed in China, which was presented to a great writer Liu Xiaobo. It greatly encouraged the Chinese people who desire freedom, democracy and peace. But Beijing authorities continue threatening the world peace, denying the universal values, depriving people of their basic human rights, and causing and worsening a large number of social catastrophes. Almost everyday, Beijing authorities abuse the forces to draw on the police, armed police and troops to suppress the people. Chinese government has developed an overloaded military power on the basis of oppressing and exploiting Chinese people. China achieves a real military rise under the guise of peaceful rise. However, numerous Chinese people uphold peace and sensibility, though they often dangerously struggle for their rights. Mr. Chen Guangcheng, a blind lawyer, stood courageously like Gandhi with his peaceful rights campaign and paid heavy price for his love, dedication and rights service. Blind, disabled but strong-willed, Mr. Chen Guangcheng has not only obtained the lawyer's license, but also done a lot of human rights and charity work. Thus, in January 2005, he was named by “Asia Week" as "Top Ten Person of the Year." In addition, he is committed to assuming the moral responsibility and safeguarding the rights of the unprivileged groups even though it requires him to challenge the elite. Due to his disclosure of the brutal implementation of family planning policy in Linyi, Mr. Chen Guangcheng suffered severe persecution. In 2006, he was sentenced four years and three months imprisonment on the charge of "malicious destruction of property and gathering a crowd to obstruct traffic”. In September 2010, after fulfilling his sentence, he was released and has been closely monitored by the authorities since, suffering house arrest and even physical assaults. Local authorities dispatched at least a dozen of personnel to strictly monitor all the activities outside his home and village. His cell phone signal was blocked. In February, a video of “Mr. Chen Guangcheng and his family under house arrest by the authorities” came to light, which made the situation even worse. He has been completely isolated, losing all contact with the outside world. In May 2006, he was in Time Magazine's list of "2006's Top 100 People Who Shape Our World"; in the end of 2006 , he was the winner of the Human Rights Fighter Award of the New Zealand Asia-Pacific Human Rights; in July 2007, the Philippines Ramon Magsaysay Award Council conferred him the “Emergent Leadership Award” (often called the"Asian Nobel Award"). Like the blind Helen Keller, Mr. Chen Guangcheng has earned a supreme honor for the disabled and also for the Chinese people. We believe that if the Nobel Peace Prize blooms once again in China, the entire world would eulogize Mr. Chen Guangcheng for his selfless and fearless spirit and praise his noble personality, leading to a positive impact on China's peace development and world’s peace.
Therefore, we propose that all the peace-loving people around the world should work together to promote and support the nomination of Mr. Chen Guangcheng as the next Nobel Peace Prize candidate.
We hope that ladies and gentlemen qualified to nominate submit your letter of nomination of Chinese human rights activist, Mr. Chen Guangcheng, for Nobel Peace Price.
