( S.H.A.N. & Burma's News Published by Burma's Chinese) Burma’s main opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), marked on 27 May the 15th anniversary of its landslide election victory. It was attended by nearly 500 people including party leaders ,members, diplomats, veteran politicians, ethnic national leaders, elected representatives (MP) and famous student leaders from 8888 nationwide uprising. It calls on the military government that it has the responsibility to work with and in accordance with the wish of the people, for the emergence of a people’s parliament. The failure or refusal of the ruling junta to form a parliament is also against the laws set out by the junta. The following is summary of its 6-page long statement:
1. We demand the immediate and unconditional release from house arrest of the National League for Democracy (NLD) vice-chairman U Tin Oo and General Secretary Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who were violently attacked for their steadily efforts for the emergence of democracy and human rights in Burma. 2. As a true Union of Burma could not be built without the participation of ethnic nationals, we demand the immediate and unconditional release of the chairman of one of the ethnic national political party, Shan National League for Democracy (SNLD) U Hkun Htun Oo and Secretary U Sai Nyunt Lwin and other ethnic national leaders. 3. As elected representatives (Members of Parliament, or MPs) were mandated by the people to utilise power on their behalf in 1990 election, we demand the immediate and unconditional release of all detained MPs including ethnic national MPs. 4. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners who have been detained by means of punishment for their political beliefs and activities. 5. As the NLD is a legal political party, we demand the immediate reopening of NLD organising offices from all levels which have been sealed off nearly two years. 6. In accordance with democratic principles, or according to rights given by political party registration laws, political parties must be allowed to rally freely. Dated 27-May-2005
