JimWallis An Open Letter to Mr. Jim Wallis of Sojourners
Dear Mr. Wallis:
In a PBS Frontline program broadcast earlier, you strongly criticized President George W. Bush for his “bad theology”. I wonder what you meant “bad theology”. Here is what Paul said in I Corinthians 2:14-15 “But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one.” (NASB Here, ‘the things of the Spirit of God ‘ implies the Bible. In an email I sent to you earlier, I questioned whether you are a born-again Christian. What does a born-again Christian mean? In John 3:3 Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” (NIV). If you cannot see it, how can you be in it? Only a born-again Christian can be a spiritual man to whom Paul referred. If you are not a born-again Christian, you cannot understand the Bible. So your “bad theology” could be “good theology” and your “good theology” could be “bad theology”, theoretically anyway. I think that you still might be a Christian but just do not know the Truth.
Now about the Iraq War, it certainly is part of the global War on Terror, or World War IV if you wish, the Cold War being World War III [1]. It is too late to debate whether the Iraq War should have been started. The matter of fact was that most intelligent agencies around the world, not just the US, believed that Saddam Hussein had WMD before the shots were fired and the United Nations was not strong enough to stand up against Saddam Hussein despite so many attempts. Saddam Hussein is a liar and thinks that everyone lies as well. In retrospect, if the US had withdrawn its troupes from Saudi Arabia soon after the 1990/91 Gulf War, maybe the 9/11 event could have been avoided. But it is too late for that. We had to win this War since the alternative is just too horrible.
I do agree with you on one point you made in a recent Meet the Press: God may choose either a Democrat or a Republican in an American election. However, to a born-again Christian like me and during the time of crisis, the first thing we look for is whether or not the candidate is a born-again Christian. I tried to determine whether or not John Kerry was such one. We knew that his testimony in the Congress during the Viet-Nam War was essentially lying under oath. Exodus 20:16 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” (NIV) Here, neighbor means American soldiers. You could disagree strongly with that War but did not have to say what he said. Even if after he had made the mistakes, he could confess the sin later and became a born-again Christian. He did not do that. I also bothered by other things during the past election about John Kerry. Let us hope that in the future candidates from both parties are born-again Christians so that we can have more choices.
According to the June 28 issue of Time magazine, former President Bill Clinton thought that the Iraq War was inevitable. I hope that this settles the issue whether we would have the Iraq War or not.
You do not have to agree with me on the above issues. But due to your unique position, I feel that you may contribute to our war effort in special ways, which is why I am writing this open letter.
1. Fight for religious freedom in countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Cuba, North Korea, China, etc. Matthew 4:4 “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” These peoples should have the rights to be Christians as well.
2. Our troupes are making sacrifices everyday. Freedom is not free. Please ask activists to bring thanks to the families of our troupes and let them know what their sacrifices mean to American people, Iraqi people, and all peoples in the world.
3. You must know many activists all over the world, especially in Europe. Please share my documents with them so that they can appreciate different viewpoints on the Iraq War.
4. Share my draft paper with Muslim governments in the world or their embassies and ask their comments. Maybe we do not have to go to the Middle East to have a dialog among scholars of different religions.
Thank you very much.
God bless.
John Han
