Green Week 2006 - Biodiversity is life - conference programme
Biological diversity, or biodiversity, is the rich variety of species, ecosystems and genes that forms the web of life on which we all depend.

Europe hosts a unique set of natural diversity. However, loss of biodiversity has accelerated to an unprecedented level, both in Europe and worldwide. The main causes of biodiversity loss are well known. The principal cause is the destruction, degradation and fragmentation of wildlife habitats. Other pressures include over-exploitation of certain species, the spread of invasive alien species and pollution. These direct pressures reflect a range of underlying driving forces, including demographic changes, economic and sector development, technology and social and cultural factors.
The EU's leaders agreed in 2001 to halt the loss of biodiversity in the EU by 2010 and to restore habitats and natural systems.
The timescale for delivering on this commitment has now reached the halfway mark. However, the decline is continuing and is far from halted. The Green Week 2006 conference programme therefore looks at key aspects of EU biodiversity policy and potential approaches for strengthening cooperation with stakeholders to ensure the 2010 target is reached. The programme is structured around four main strands:
Biodiversity: a global issue Managing natural resources Space for nature Biodiversity and society.
You can now discover the names of the speakers who will take the stand and are prepared to answer your questions during the debates. Names in bold are confirmed, all the others are contacted and we are awaiting their final confirmation. We will further update the conference pages with more confirmed names closer to the start of Green Week.

Tuesday 30 May 2006
On the opening day, Tuesday 30 May 2006, we introduce the concept of biodiversity as a forgotten value and a condition for our survival. We intend to remind people that we are not detached from the natural environment and that all damage we are doing to it will ultimately backfire. Sessions will focus on how the survival of a single species, humans, has had such a profound impact on the environment, on the huge rate at which we are losing room for nature and on what it will cost the natural environment and ourselves if no action is taken. Overall, the first day will present the extent of the present crisis, define the challenges involved and set the stage for the rest of the week.

Wednesday 31 May 2006
Is biodiversity some exotic idea or symbol which exists out in the wild and away from humans? Does the economy, medicine or any of the issues we deal with in our daily lives have anything to do with this obscure concept? Does conservation of the marine environment affect our summer swim? Has anything been done at a European level for the preservation of biodiversity? The second day will focus on the relationship between the economical and technological advances and biodiversity. Values will be set for ecosystem services and it will be illustrated how, through managing and understanding ecosystems, development and sustainability can walk hand in hand. Debate will also focus on NATURA 2000 networks and the challenge of delimitating such networks in marine habitats.

Thursday 1 June 2006
Day three of Green Week will effectively pick up where day two left off and expand on the same issues. What is the impact of trade on biodiversity and what standards can be set to mitigate this situation? Is it possible to not only sustain biodiversity but also to use it as a means of economical development? Climate change is threatening yes, but may it also provide certain opportunities? Biodiversity at the political decision making table may be an issue, but how can this issue be presented to the man on the street and what can he do for our natural resources? A closer look will be taken at the impact of trade on biodiversity. How branding nature and eco tourism in developing countries may be the key to their advance rather than the decimation of nature. And environmental policy and impact assessment, as well as decision making will be explored at the political level.
Have a look at the more detailed day programme.
Friday 2 June 2006
On the final (half) day of Green Week the spotlight will be put on the Countdown to the 2010 targets. In June 2002 the European Community Heads of State agreed to halt the loss of biodiversity in Europe by 2010. Just how far are we from reaching that target? And what is required to fulfil this commitment?

Exhibitions
The Green Week exhibition is the place to present your organisation or company as a forerunner on biodiversity actions, to learn about best practices, to network and to find new partners for your project or campaign. Exhibitors are located all over the conference facility in the direct vicinity of the conference rooms.
Due to space limitations we are not able to satisfy all requests for stands. We received almost 140 applications of interesting applications, but could, unfortunately, only reply positively to 72 of them. We looked at relevance to the theme of Green Week, for a good geographical spread and balance between the different stakeholders and at the originality and interactivity of the stand concept. We hope that, when you visit Green Week, you will enjoy what all these organisations will offer you.

Youth activities for Green Week 2006
Youth
Young EU citizens represent the future! The mere fact that our children may inherit the environmental degradation of today suggests that there should be a high degree of awareness among young people. That is why Green Week always emphasises the special role they play.
Young people are very inquisitive, open-minded and unprejudiced. They keep reminding us that we are the caretakers of their future. They show and tell us how they see that future. One of the ways to show us their concerns is via the Green Week school competition.
Green Week 2006 School Competition
The Green Week 2006 School Competition encourages young people from all EU Member States, candidate and EFTA countries to learn about environmental issues and express themselves artistically. This year's school competition will focus on BIODIVERSITY.
